Experts, Gurus and Masters, oh my!

    By dana | September 30, 2007

    What is an expert?

Here’s the thing. If you’re talking about an expert brain surgeon or a master acrobatic pilot, I would definitely want to know they have been granted such status because of their extensive education, training and experience.

But when it comes to the ever evolving online worlds of marketing, blogging and social media, expert is not an easy term to define. Of course, there are the “big guys(and gals)” who are held up by everyone as the gurus and masters, as well they should be…most of the time :)

To me, the people who know more than I do on a certain subject and are willing to share some of that knowledge are my gurus, experts and masters. I am lucky to be able to interact with these gurus on a daily basis.

There is an overabundance of people recognized as experts, gurus and masters by some organization, other people or even  themselves. Remember to choose your experts carefully. After all, there’s always that rogue “1 out of 10″ expert who doesn’t think you should floss , doesn’t think global warming exists, etc.

Who do you are your experts, gurus or masters?  What criteria do you use to determine who is or isn’t?

One blogger I always learn a lot from is Skellie (http://www.skelliewag.org/). After reflecting a bit about why I consider her as such an expert, I think it mainly has to do with consistency. A lot of hard work goes into publishing quality work for it to be useful to others…but an expert guru is of no help to no one if he/she can’t be depended upon to continue sharing knowledge.

My experts are not necessarily those who know a great deal about their areas of focus. They include those who are also willing to share and provide further inputs and offer discussion points. These are all helpful to one another.

Well anyone that is good at what they do I consider an expert…however, everyone make mistakes, so as long as they learn from their mistake, they are an expert as well.

WEll, I don’t know, thinking about it…I don’t think you can consider your an expert because there is alway something new to learn another day.

I am not too worry about this though

@Joanne I couldn’t agree with you more about Skellie. I’m always excited when see a new post on skelliewag.com in my Bloglines.

@YC Differing points of view can be really helpful…anything that forces you to think!

@Warrior I trust less in those that consider themselves experts as opposed to those whom others have given that title :)

Strange, tried to comment but it didn’t go through. Hope this one does. I just feel that experts are the ones who would actually do something more than talk about it. True masters.
