A Quick Tip for Building A Stumbletastic Fan Base

    By dana | September 27, 2007

In honor of reaching my 3,000th thumb, I thought I’d share a quick stumbling tip I’ve picked up along the way.

If you want to build your StumbleUpon fan base or add friends, I’ve found it’s highly effective to spend a little time, even five minutes, each day Stumbling stumblers. It’s exactly like stumbling pages, but you set the stumble option by clicking on the menu on the toolbar that defaults to say “All” (See poor quality screen shot below) and Stumble! away.

As you stumble along, you can look for people who are interested in the same things you are and befriend them or stumble their favorites.

Why bother visiting and reviewing people if I’m not adding them as a friend?

Even if you don’t have enough in common with a stumbler to want to be their friend (remember you have a friend limit of 200), you can always review their blog and let them know you think their stumbles are pretty cool!

A lot of stumblers will reciprocate the review and some might even become a fan. Again, my specialty is not the algorithms, but most people seem to agree that the more fans and good reviews you have, the better your stumble power. I’ve also found some great blogs simply by exploring other people’s profiles and visiting the links in their about me section.

One note when stumbling and reviewing stumblers…whether you choose to review a stumbler or not, you can still give their profile/blog a thumbs up or thumbs down rating. Those thumbs up do count towards your total.

One more tip on reviewing other stumbers from the “I should really read the FAQ’s or pay more attention to directions” file.

If you’re on another user’s profile and decide to review their blog, that does not automatically give them a thumbs up. You have to click on the I like them! thumb at the top of the screen. This one might be obvious to you all, but I somehow missed it for a long time and would just review people’s blogs without technically giving them a positive review via the thumb…plus, I was missing out on adding to my thumbs count too.

I carried on like this for awhile until fellow stumbler onreact let me know about it. So in his honor, I give you poor quality screenshot #2 showing his profile.

The red arrow on the left is pointing to the I like them! button…click that if you like them before you review their blog. You can click it afterwards, but I’ve found it’s easier just to get in the habit of clicking it first. The arrow on the right of the screen shows where you click “review their blog.”

Great point Dana - this really does work!

I’ve been doing this since August 15 when I only had 34 friends.

As of today I have 105. I think it’s worked out alright!

Yup I do my fair share of this - and I think it is always important to review the stumblers and thumbing them up if you like what you see. The nice thing is when they reciprocate and then later you get along real well with them!

@Tad Ever starred in a screen shot before? :)

@YC For sure, especially if they’re on the other side of the world and they keep an eye on your blogs for you while you’re asleep

Very interesting Dana. I typically don’t add people as “friends” unless I have some sort of relationship with them (professional, friendly, colleague, etc)

Dana. I’ve got to say that I’m glad you pinged me. You’ve got some awesome info about SU here. I had no idea about the thumbs up button for stumblers. So all those stumblers I’ve reviewed have not gotten a thumbs up. And thanks for the head’s up that I can only have 200 friends. I’ll file that in the “just get on the damm thing and ride it as fast and as far as you can without falling off” file.
